Connecting Youth Culture (CYC)Connecting Youth Culture (CYC) is a dedicated team that specialises in arts for young people and forms an integral part of the Youth Service. CYC works with young people aged 13 - 19 across a varied landscape with a rich social mix. Its approach embodies a conviction that the arts can make a positive impact on young people, particularly where provision includes high quality equipment, training and support. There is a strong emphasis on accessibility, including use of mobile resources.
The ethos of CYC is to ensure that young people are the main drivers of their own art projects and influence the organisation's policy. It supports and facilitates, challenging positive and creative risk-taking to express, explore and unlock potential, and to self-evaluate achievement. The results are spectacular. CYC delivers over 500 art projects a year, as well as exhibitions, performances, gigs and showcases culminating in the Cultureshock youth arts festival.
CYC's experience to date confirms that enabling young people to engage in creative arts activities can help them with education and career, raise personal self esteem, develop management skills, and strengthen community ties. CYC uses a carefully structured four stage approach - moving from "engagement", reaching out to the reluctant, to "challenge" to new activities and art forms, to specific training "progression" towards a "career".
