Neighbourhood profiles

North Yorkshire is a large county, with diverse communities, and a mix of very different towns and villages. To make the information we have about the county a bit easier to manage, and to make sure it's relevant to your local area, we have developed neighbourhood profiles. They contain a variety of statistics about the county, covering topics including age and ethnicity, health, crime and anti-social behaviour, quality of life, the environment, employment, education and the local economy.

The county of North Yorkshire is split into seven local authority district areas and the City of York unitary authority. The interactive neighbourhood profiles are split into two sections - one providing district level information (giving an overview of the whole county), and a second set of profiles, with one for each district and the City of York (giving more localised information at ward level).

The neighbourhood profile web pages are interactive and offer a variety of options for the compilation of data. To get the best from the profiles, we therefore strongly recommend that you read the Neighbourhood profiles user guide before you start.

North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is the largest county in England, covering around 3,102 square miles stretching from Scarborough on the North Sea coast to Bentham in the West, and from the edge of Teesside to south of the M62. It includes the urban areas of Harrogate and Scarborough, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, 28 market towns and many small villages and hamlets.

597,700 people live in the County, and population density is low. Almost 20 per cent of the population is over 65 and this is expected to rise to nearly 24 per cent by 2018.

The economy is also very varied. Generally, unemployment is low, and labour market participation rates high. Small businesses dominate with 85% of businesses employing fewer than 10 people. There are high levels of self employment. In the private sector, tourism (around 12% of the workforce) and agriculture (around 3%) are very significant - particularly in the rural uplands where they account for as much as 50% of the workforce.

People in North Yorkshire are strongly in touch with the rural nature of the county. The largest segments of the population identified by the Personicx Geo classification system are 'Country Pursuits', 'Wildlife and the Environment', 'Retired and Rural' and 'Rural Connections', all at around 3 times the proportions seen in the national population.

Covering an area of 105 square miles, the district of York comprises an urban area centred on the historic city surrounded by many small rural and semi rural settlements.

The total population is 198,800, 4.9 per cent of which come from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities. The proportion of people from BME communities doubled between 1991 and 2001 and is expected to grow further in the next few years.

York's population is growing and is projected to rise by 4.2 per cent between 2001 and 2011 and by a further 8.3 per cent up to 2021.

Over the last few years, traditional industries such as chocolate manufacturing and railways have been replaced by a high-tech and science based industrial sector linked to the universities.

The population of the City of York is diverse in character. The largest segments of the population identified by the Personicx Geo classification system include 'City Singletons', 'Adventurous Students', 'Gardeners World' and 'Aged in the City Suburbs' all at around 2 to 3 times the proportions seen in the population of Great Britain as a whole.
