Harrogate DistrictHarrogate District covers 1,308 sq km (505 sq miles), with a population of 160,500 (mid year 2008 estimates).The district comprises a large rural area extending north of the Leeds / Bradford conurbation and up to the eastern fringes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Rivers Swale, Ure and Ouse broadly contain the district to the east and flow southward through the Vale of York. The River Wharfe generally marks the southern boundary of the district, whilst to the west and north, the land rises to form part of the Pennine upland chain. Much of the western half of the district forms part of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The main towns are Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and Boroughbridge. Industry in the Harrogate has traditionally focused on agriculture and tourism. However, there has been a recent shift towards more business focused tourism and digital industries. 36% of the population is aged over 50 and their average age is 40.2 years (2001 census). The 2008 Acxiom survey found that 96% of households in Harrogate like the neighbourhood they live in and 10% feel that their neighbourhood has improved over the last 3 years. 63% of households in the district are actively reducing the energy that they usewhile 76% actively recycle household waste (Acxiom, 2009).
