Olympic diver helps pupils opt for healthy lifestyles

Primary school pupils in North Yorkshire are able to learn all about teenage diving star Tom Daley with a new website that has gone live this week. The website, run by North Yorkshire County Caterers which supplies the majority of the county's schools with lunches, aims to educate children and parents about school meals and healthy eating and includes information on diving, swimming and gymnastics and has video clips and bi-monthly blogs.

Every month children have the opportunity to win a t-shirt signed by Tom when they 'Ask Tom' a question.

Tom Daley was Britain's second youngest athlete to compete in an Olympic Games when he went to Beijing in 2008 at just 14 years of age. Tom was 7th in the Men's Individual 10 Metre Platform Final and 8th in the Synchronised Final. He is aiming to win a medal at the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

The website at www.myschooollunch.co.uk/northyorkshire/tomdaley will follow Tom's progress as he trains and prepares for the next Olympic Games.

To celebrate the launch of the website Applegarth School pupil, Olivia Proud, went to the British Diving Championships in Sheffield to meet Tom Daley. She received a t-shirt signed by Tom at a special presentation at her school last Monday.

Keith Tillbrook, general manager for North Yorkshire County Caterers which runs the My School Lunch website said: "We are excited about the website with Tom being launched in North Yorkshire. The site is very interactive so it is a great way to get children interested and they can watch videos, download activity sheets and learn about different sports and healthy lifestyles."

County Councillor John Watson, North Yorkshire's executive member for schools said: "Educating children about healthy eating and lifestyles can be a daunting task but role models like Tom Daley give the children someone to aspire to."
