On your marks

A North Yorkshire schoolgirl's sporting knowledge has won her a special prize in a national competition. Lucy Bloomfield of West Heslerton Church of England voluntary controlled primary school answered a series of questions about key sporting events in a national competition on the My School Lunch website.

Lucy had logged onto the Roxy and Billie section of the website which offers a whole raft of healthy-eating themed computer games and nutritional advice as well as competitions.

Roxy and Billie, a lively and adventurous pair of characters, have been adopted as mascots by North Yorkshire County Caterers to entertain seven to 11 year olds as well as providing healthy eating information. The website serves as an information point for pupils as well as parents, giving them the chance to view the school menu and communicate with the catering team. It currently gets more than 2,000 hits from North Yorkshire every month.

To win her prize - £65 worth of vouchers for either Argos, Woolworths or WH Smith - Lucy had to write about her favourite sporting event – the Olympics - as well as answer questions correctly.

North Yorkshire County Councillor John Watson, executive member for schools said: "Getting children to understand the importance of a healthy diet isn't easy. The Billy and Roxy site, with its competitions and games make it great fun."
