ny times onlineNorth Yorkshire residents are being invited to voice their views on spending priorities as the County Council presses ahead with action to make the huge savings demanded by Government. The reductions in spending, necessary to tackle the country's debt, will have an impact on services provided by the County Council. The Government has said local authorities can expect a cut of at least 25 per cent in Government grants over the next four financial years. For North Yorkshire County Council, this would mean a reduction of about £69m over five years, including this one. The impact of inflation on goods and services and increasing demand for services like adult social care mean this figure will actually be higher. Reductions on this scale will not be found simply by being more efficient, looking at how goods and services are bought, streamlining offices, changing ways of working, or using more technology, particularly as the County Council is already a relatively low-spending authority. The Council will continue to reduce the amount spent on administration, management, meetings, travel and expenses where possible, and in the past six years it has already reduced this type of spending by £60m. However, meeting the level of saving now required will call for tough decisions, and it will not be possible to protect all front line services. The Council is now looking at what it does and how it works to see where further savings can be made. As part of this, it wants residents' views on the approach it should take and the ideas it is considering. Many areas are being examined for possible savings, and this is where your views can count. (See the panel, below, to find out how to get involved.) |
North Yorkshire County Council wants residents' views on its ideas for reducing spending. Members of the public are being invited to take part in an online questionnaire about how and where savings might be made. You can find the questionnaire at the County Council's website, www.northyorks.gov.uk Another part of the consultation is a series of roadshows across North Yorkshire in the autumn. There will be one in each of the seven districts. These will be held in the evening or at the weekend to allow as many people as possible to attend and will give people the opportunity to ask questions and make comments. Dates and venues will be announced in the next issue of NY Times and online at www.northyorks.gov.uk |
North Yorkshire County Council has already made savings of £60m over the past three years by improving the way it does things and examining its management structure and staffing levels. The Council will continue to make big savings in these areas in the years to come. For example, by: As part of a review of communications, the format, frequency and delivery of NY Times is under consideration. The Government has asked Lord Hutton, former Labour Pensions Minister, to carry out an urgent review of public sector pensions. His initial findings are expected to be announced in September. The Government has announced a two-year pay freeze from 2011/12 for public sector workers, except those earning £21,000 a year or less. This is expected to reduce County Council spending by about £800,000 each year. |
