Following the creation of North Yorkshire Council in April 2023, we have a duty to prepare and adopt a local plan for the area. When adopted, this will replace the existing local plans.
You can find out about existing local plans on our planning policy in your local area page.
As we progress work on the plan, we will keep you up to date and let you know important information such as when consultation and engagement will take place and how you can have your say.
The timetable for the North Yorkshire Local Plan in response to the introduction of a new national plan-making system has been approved by Executive on 16 June 2026.
Under the new system, all councils are required to publish a local plan timetable outlining key milestones, including gateway assessments, consultation stages and adoption. This timetable replaces the previously approved local development scheme.
A lot of progress has already been made on the local plan, and this work remains valuable and will inform the next stages. We are still aiming to adopt the plan in 2029, consistent with the current programme. However, the route to adoption will follow a revised set of stages.
A key feature of the new system is a mandatory 30-month period for the main stages of plan preparation (or 23 months excluding the examination and adoption period). This period must commence by 30 April 2027 and is preceded by a getting ready phase.
