Investment in hub brings more opportunities for young people

Eastside Community Centre can now host a greater range of activities and training sessions, alongside a new community café, after the opening of Eastside Community Hub.

The hub is part of a £17 million investment in the town under the Government’s Town Deal scheme.

As part of the scheme, a purpose-built gym for Whitby Boxing Club was created. The Abbots Road building received a contribution from the Towns Fund of £823,000 to build a modern new home for Whitby Boxing Club, to enable more young people to participate. Additional funding came from Sport England and The Sirius Foundation.

In 2021, the Government announced that Whitby would receive £17.1 million of Town Deal funding.

The Town Deal programme in Whitby is overseen by a board made up of independent business and community leaders.

Other projects in Whitby receiving money from the Town Fund include a scheme to bring the former town hall back into use, a new maritime training hub and harbourside public realm improvements.
