We have responsibility for animal welfare relating to farmed animals. We ensure the welfare of animals and respond to welfare-related reports from the public.

Our inspectors ensure livestock is correctly identified and moved with the required documents and cattle passports. They also carry out record checks at farms, markets, slaughterhouses and during transportation to make sure there is full traceability of livestock movements. To reduce the risk of disease, they also ensure carcasses are disposed of properly.

District councils offer dog warden services and look after licences for boarding kennels, zoos, pet shops and riding stables.
