Both the County Council and the district councils have responsibilities for animal welfare.

Our remit relates to farmed animals. Our animal health and welfare team works to ensure the welfare of animals and responds to welfare-related reports from the public.

Our inspectors ensure livestock is correctly identified and moved with the required documents and cattle passports. They also carry out record checks at farms, markets, slaughterhouses and during transportation to make sure there is full traceability of livestock movements. To reduce the risk of disease, they also ensure carcasses are disposed of properly.

District councils offer dog warden services and also look after licences for boarding kennels, zoos, pet shops and riding stables.
