Carer support groups and organisations

Information about carer support groups and local support available from one of the carers' centres in North Yorkshire.

Carer support groups

Carer support groups are usually small, with members meeting informally to discuss various topics.

The meetings can help carers:

  • Cope with caring responsibilities;
  • Meet, discuss and learn from other carers in similar situations;
  • Alleviate isolation;
  • Support each other; and
  • Receive emotional and social support and information.

Meetings are usually free but there can be a small charge for refreshments. If you feel you need one-to-one support, your local carers' centre or carers' resource should provide the information you need. Counselling support may be available through your GP.

Local carers' support services

Local carers' support services are organisations whose purpose is to give practical and emotional support to carers. There are two such providers for adult carers in North Yorkshire, operating from five main bases.

The local carers' support services cover Craven and Airedale; Hambleton and Richmondshire; Harrogate; Scarborough and Ryedale; and Selby.

Services offered by the local carers' support services include:

  • Confidential information, advice, emotional support and representation;
  • A carer assessment on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council;
  • Benefits advice;
  • Regular information by way of circulars, bulletins or newsletters;
  • Referrals to other specialist support organisations;
  • Information sessions, courses and other related activities; and
  • Help for carers who need support to continue working and caring.

The local carers' support services also work in partnership with carers, carer groups and other organisations to improve services for carers and promote their interests.

Information about support for young carers can be found on our young carers - support and advice page.

Carer Advice Line. By calling our freephone number 0808 50 15 939 you get straight through to a carer support worker who can help you then and there with your query. It’s a direct line to someone who knows about caring responsibilities and the support available both from Carers’ Resource and from other organisations and agencies.

The Carer Advice Line is open between 10am and 4pm each day, Monday to Friday. Outside of those times and during office hours, or if all our on-call support workers are already on a call, you will be put through to our normal office line.
