Find out what happens when you have an education, health and care plan (EHCP) assessment.

What is an education, health and care plan (EHCP)?

  • An education, health and care plan (EHCP) looks at all your needs in education, health and care that make it hard for you to learn
  • You will look at what you would like to work towards and what help you need to do it
  • The special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCo) will help if you feel that you need extra help.  They can ask for an education, health and care plan (EHCP) assessment for you

Where can I get help?

Ask for a needs assessment

If you are 16 years old or older you can ask for your own assessment.

How long will the assessment take?

As soon as we get the assessment request, we have 20 weeks to do the whole process.

By week 6

We decide if we will do the assessment.

By week 12

All the evidence is sent in.

By week 16

We look at the evidence and decide if we will write an education, health and care plan (EHCP).

By week 20

We agree a draft plan together with parents or carers. They have 15 days to look at the plan. The final education, health and care plan (EHCP) is then sent out.

Reviewing the plan

Once the final plan has been shared there will be a meeting every year to talk about the plan.

From Year 9 this meeting must talk about your independence as part of your preparation for adulthood.
