NHS health checks in North Yorkshire

The NHS health check is a free check-up of your heart and blood vessels health (cardiovascular health). It can tell you whether you are at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as:

  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • kidney disease
  • stroke

During the check-up you will discuss how to reduce your risk of these conditions.

Free blood pressure checks in pharmacies

You can get your blood pressure checked in a pharmacy without having to see your GP.

A community pharmacist can measure the blood pressure of consenting adults who visit the pharmacy by offering a free blood pressure check to anyone who:

  • is aged 40 or over (exceptions may apply for those with a family history of hypertension or who are at increased risk of developing hypertension, such as people from South Asian or African-Caribbean communities)
  • is not already receiving treatment for hypertension
  • has not had their blood pressure checked by a healthcare professional within the last five years

If the readings indicate normal blood pressure, the pharmacist will provide advice on maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours.

If readings indicate high blood pressure, the pharmacist will offer Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) through the pharmacy and provide advice on healthy lifestyle behaviours.

If you are found to have very high blood pressure, the pharmacist will urgently refer you to your GP (or another urgent care service) and will notify your GP practice through GP Connect or NHSmail.

If you are found to have low blood pressure, the pharmacist will provide appropriate advice and may refer you to your GP if there are any concerns.

All blood pressure readings are sent to the general practice from the community pharmacy so records can be updated and appropriate action taken.
