Getting enough exercise means a stronger, fitter you. It's good for your body and your mind too.

How to improve your health by walking briskly every day

We are supporting a new drive to encourage adults to get more active. The local drive aims to get people walking briskly every day in bursts of ten minutes or more.

Just ten continuous minutes of brisk walking every day gets the heart pumping and can make you feel better, more energetic and improve your mood. Over time, it can lower the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Whether you're walking to work, stepping out at lunchtime, walking to the shops or local park or taking the dog for a walk, there are lots of ways you can fit ten minutes of brisk walking into your life. You don't have to go to the gym, wear sportswear or start expensive fitness programmes to get the benefits of an active lifestyle, walking counts too!

There is a free Active 10 app which shows how much brisk walking you are doing and where you can fit ten minute bursts of brisk walking into your day. The app also sets you brisk walking goals and provides hints and tips to keep you going.

Exercise referral in North Yorkshire

The exercise referral scheme offers eligible patients the opportunity to engage in tailored physical activity schemes, at a reduced cost, in a number of locations across North Yorkshire. The purpose of exercise referral schemes is to increase physical activity among people who are inactive or sedentary and are otherwise healthy or who already have a health condition or other risk factors for disease.

Referral to the scheme

Referral to the scheme can be sought through a health professional, who can refer patients to the scheme via a referral form. Completed referral forms should be forwarded to the relevant leisure facility by the referring GP or health professional. A copy should also be retained for the patient's notes.
