A health roadshow, a crafting workshop and a chair yoga session are among the activities on offer at North Yorkshire libraries as part of a week-long initiative to improve mental health and wellbeing.
Self Care Week, which runs from 14 to 20 November, is an annual national campaign which raises awareness of what we can do to improve physical health and mental wellbeing.
Our library service supports health and wellbeing through Reading Well collections, wellbeing bags and self care toolkits for young people. Throughout the year, libraries host information roadshows and drop-ins with health partners and a number of groups, such as Knit and Natter, which bring people together to reduce social isolation.
Executive member for libraries, Cllr Greg White, said: “If you are looking to improve your health and wellbeing, your local library is a great place to start. They provide access to accredited health information, health signposting, reading programmes promoting learning and literacy, social and recreational activities and volunteering opportunities to keep people active.
“Self Care Week provides a great opportunity to showcase the range of support on your doorstep as well as offering visitors the chance to chat to other people in their community as well as staff and partners.”
To mark Self Care Week 2022, Northallerton library is running a music fair from 10am to noon on Saturday, 19 November, as well as a self care crafting workshop from 2.30pm to 3.30pm on Tuesday, 15 November.
Malton library is hosting a journaling workshop from 11am to noon on Monday, 14 November, and a MIND drop-in session from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Tuesday, 15 November. It is also running chair yoga, where yoga can be practiced while seated, from 4pm to 5pm on Wednesday, 16 November, and chair zumba from 10.30am to 11.30am on Saturday, 19 November.
A youth music development charity, NYMAZ, is hosting a musical coffee morning at Scarborough library from 11am to 12.30pm on Wednesday, 16 November. A slipper social event is being held from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Thursday, 17 November, where people can pick up a free pair of anti-slip slippers and stay for refreshments and a chat.
Finally, Harrogate library is running a drop-in health roadshow from 1pm to 4pm on Thursday, 17 November.
