People can get advice about fire risks to help to make sure their Christmas sparkles safely as Northallerton library teams up with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Residents will be able to speak to Laura Hodgson, Community Safety Officer for Hambleton, during a community drop-in session on Friday, 3 December, from 10am to 1pm.
“Fire safety is very important, especially over Christmas time,” said Laura. “Fairy lights, candles and decorations help to create a festive atmosphere to enjoy with family and friends, but to ensure you have the merriest of Christmases, keep fire safety at the top of your list.
“Place candles in suitable holders and away from curtains, never leave cooking unattended and, of course, test your smoke alarms. If you have visitors staying, make sure everyone in your home knows what to do in a fire – in the event of fire you should get out, stay out and call 999.
“Do a Christmas good deed and test the smoke alarms of someone you know who may need help, such as an older relative or neighbour, to ensure their safety, as they are at greater risk from fire. The simple act of sharing a cuppa and a mince pie with them could help them feel less lonely and isolated, if they are by themselves. Colder weather brings its own menaces, too. Take care when using portable heaters or open fires.”
The drop-in session will take place in a covid-secure space. There is no need to book, but you may be asked to wait if there is a queue.
County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “The library offers an ideal venue to help our partners in the fire and rescue service share this important safety advice.”
Another community drop-in session with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is planned for Friday, 21 January, 2022. Find out more out more about fire safety.
