A new service to help North Yorkshire residents find out how much they may have to pay for the care services they need to remain independent in their own homes and within their own communities is now available online.

North Yorkshire County Council provides a range of social care services that support people to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. People may be asked to pay for some or all of the services they receive, depending on their financial circumstances, following a financial assessment.

“Some people think that moving into a care home is the only solution if they are finding living independently is becoming a struggle,” said Richard Webb, North Yorkshire’s Corporate Director, Health and Adult Services.

“But, with the right help and support, many people can live safely and independently in their own home and participate in social activities in the community. This usually costs far less than a care home and for most people is a better option, and they may be eligible to receive financial support from the County Council.

“The quickest and easiest way to find out if you will need to pay for the care you receive from us is to complete our online self-assessment form. This means you can start the financial assessment process straight away and provide as much information as possible, without waiting for a one-to-one assessment. It also means you can do the assessment at home at a time which suits you, with the support of a family member or friend if you feel you would like some help.”

The online self-assessment form has been developed with feedback from residents, who have said they find it straightforward to complete. It is in two parts:

  • an eligibility checker to see if a customer might have to pay for, or towards, their care; and
  • a full online assessment with all details which gives an indication of how much a customer pays.

Completed assessment forms are checked by North Yorkshire County Council to ensure that people are charged the right amount for the care they receive. Find out more and check eligibility.
