North Yorkshire residents are encouraged to start composting food and garden waste by taking up an offer of discounted compost converter bins.
The initiative is designed to help people in the county reduce their carbon footprint by turning kitchen and garden waste at home into a free supply of compost for gardening. It is estimated a third of an average household’s waste can be converted in this way, rather than being sent for disposal.
Now North Yorkshire County Council has teamed up with getcomposting.com to offer residents discounted compost converters online for home delivery from £9 for a 220 litre bin (plus £5.99 delivery).
The bins are made from 100 per cent recycled plastic, which includes a combination of plastics collected by councils from waste segregation sites and kerbside collections, as well as industrial waste including old gas pipes, wheelie bins and car bumpers.
In addition to the online order, the council has 330 litre home compost bins on sale at selected household waste recycling centres in North Yorkshire for just £11.
The offer has been launched for International Compost Awareness Week, which runs from May 5 to May 11.
North Yorkshire County Councillor Andrew Lee, Executive Member for Waste Management, said: “More than 30 per cent of the average household waste can be composted and although many households already compost at home, we want others to get involved. This is a great incentive to encourage more residents to get composting.”
The bins available at the county’s household waste recycling centres are limited to two per household and payment must be made by credit or debit card only. They are only available to North Yorkshire residents and home addresses must be supplied to qualify.
They can be purchased from Household Waste Recycling Centres at;
- Harrogate (Wetherby Road)
- Seamer Carr
