The busy market town of Hawes and one of the Yorkshire Dales most popular tourist destinations is about to benefit from major road improvements.

Hawes

The work, which involves a full resurfacing of the A684 through Hawes, is essential in extending the life of the road and preventing the need for repairs in the future. This well-used route is in a poor condition and resurfacing will improve its safety for all users.

Residents and businesses in Hawes are being invited to a public meeting from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday, March 17 at The Market House with our representatives and the designers and contractors.

“I would encourage any interested parties to attend the meeting to get a full understanding of the scheme,” said local member Councillor Yvonne Peacock. “This is an opportunity for residents and businesses to have their questions answered and put forward any concerns which the highways teams will do their best to address.”

The work is financed by the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund which seeks to address issues on the 50 A-roads identified as being the most dangerous in the country.

The funding has already been used to install a new £418,000 flood detection system at flooding hotspots on the A684 – the first of its kind in North Yorkshire. It has also financed safety improvements at the crossroad junction to the west of Patrick Brompton, changes to the layout and resurfacing work in Leyburn, and new lay-bys at various points along the A684.

We were awarded £7.06m to fund a series of safety improvement projects on the A684, one of the major routes East to West through the Yorkshire Dales, from Leeming Bar through to Junction 37 of the M6. It was one of four successful bids to the Safer Roads Fund.

The resurfacing will run from the western end of the market place to the 30mph signs at the eastern edge. It is due to begin on Monday, April 25, and run until Wednesday, June 1, 2022. During this period the A684 through Hawes will be closed from 7.30am Mondays to 4.30pm Fridays. The road will be open on weekends and bank holidays.

During the works in Hawes a signed diversion route will be in place and pedestrian access will be maintained.

On-site personnel will manage access to properties and businesses within the closure however there may be times when access is not possible. See updates and details of the diversion.
