The swing bridge in Whitby is to be closed to vehicles during the regatta this weekend for the safety of pedestrians.
On Saturday, 11 August and Sunday 12 August the bridge will be closed to traffic from 10.30am to 6pm-7pm. Vehicles will be able to follow diversion signs for an alternative route between the east and west sides of Whitby. It does not affect the use of the swing bridge by boats.
North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, said: “The safety of pedestrians and road users is our first concern and it is expected that during Whitby Regatta pedestrian numbers will escalate to a point where it isn’t safe for people and vehicles to use the bridge together safely.
“That is why the bridge will be for the sole use of pedestrians over this weekend. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but safety has to be our first consideration.’’
