Road traffic accident information

View free basic collision information and road safety statistics for the county and how to request more detailed data.

As highways authority and partner within the 95 Alive partnership, we have a statutory duty under the Road Traffic Act 1988 to analyse privatised personal injury collision information.

This information is regularly supplied to us by North Yorkshire Police and is then used to inform a number of council decisions. It is also published once a year in an annual report, is supplied to the Department for Transport, and is requested regularly by consultants, partners and the media.

You can find out more about the 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire road safety partnership here. Alternatively, keep up to date via the 95 Alive Facebook page or on Twitter.

Detailed collision information

Members of the public in North Yorkshire are allowed one free standard collision data request in any one financial year.

If additional requests are received, individuals will receive a quote and if requested to continue, be charged for the time spent in the production of the data. The cost of this is based on how large an area the data is required for, and how many years data. The minimum charge is £40, the tables below provide further detail.

All requests which are being used by commercial concerns such as transport consultants, solicitors or insurers, will be charged for the time spent in the production of the data.

You can also view collision statistics and reports for different areas within North Yorkshire here.

For more in-depth information, for example to support planning applications, you must provide the following information:

  • How many years' collision data you require;
  • A plan showing the area you require the data for;
  • Your name and contact details; and
  • Whether you are making the request as a member of the public, interested public member groups, or a commercial concern.

We will review collision records and let you know whether there is a history of collisions at that site. The information you receive will depend on the type of request you make:

Type of request Information you will receive
Statistics only A tabulated statistics report on up to ten years of data. The report will show the severity of the collisions and feature a monthly breakdown of the data.
Standard collision A plan showing collisions by severity and with references, full listings and a generic summary.
Raw data only The raw GIS/Access/CSV/Accsmap key accidents data (this does not include a plan). This can be provided for any number of years data.
