All North Yorkshire Libraries are temporarily closed in response to Covid-19.

We are continuing to provide free services online, including e-books, newspapers and information.

If you need help to access online services, please ring 01609 533878.

We have made arrangements to extend loan periods. No one needs to worry about accruing fines.

Finding the library, parking and access

The library is located just off the main pedestrian precinct on Vernon Road, next door to the Iceland supermarket. There are two bus stops near the library, which are served by numerous routes. The railway station is also nearby.

The most convenient parking is at the Palm Court multi-storey on Vernon Road or the Brunswick multi-storey on York Place. Alternatively, Scarborough has a park and ride scheme on the A64 and the A165 Filey approach to town.

The library has ramps, automatic doors, lifts, a disabled toilet and an induction loop system. Shopmobility is two minutes walk away at the rear entrance to Debenhams at 5 Somerset Terrace and has a motorised scooter for use in the library.

Items available from the library

You can borrow a range of books for all ages in a variety of formats, including large print and audio. Music CDs, DVDs and foreign language titles are also available for loan, as well as micro:bits. You can request any item that is not immediately available.

Archive volunteer group

The archive volunteer group meets on Thursdays from 6.30pm to 8pm.

Class visits

Class visits to the library may be organised.

Code club

Code club meets on Thursdays from 4pm to 5pm or Saturdays from 1pm to 2pm. Please contact the library for details.

Friends of Scarborough library

The Friends of Scarborough library host regular monthly guest speakers. They also have a book group that meets on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month from 2pm to 4pm. New members are always welcome. To join please contact us by email at or pick up an application form from the library. Knitting and crochet drop-in

There is a knitting and crochet drop-in session every Wednesday from 11am.

Monthly drop-in sessions

We hold monthly genealogy and police surgery drop-in sessions. Please contact the library for details.

Reading group

reading group meets every second Monday of the month at 6pm.

Scarborough sewing bee

The Scarborough sewing bee meets on a Thursday from 5pm to 7pm.

Storytime and under-fives activities

Storytime and crafts, Mondays from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

Songs and rhymes, Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 2pm.
