At Nidderdale, we support children and young people with complex disabilities and health care needs between the ages of five and eighteen in the Harrogate, Skipton and surrounding areas of North Yorkshire. We also help the families of the children we support through offering overnight short breaks, day care, overnight care, support in the community, holiday programmes and services available to assist carers in the evenings and weekends.

Across the service we provide an opportunity for children to socialise, develop new skills, visit different places, and experience a range of activities within the units and the community. They are enabled and encouraged to contribute to the local community, whilst building relationships with others and practice having a voice in the planning of their care and future.

Nidderdale Children's Resource Centre is located in Killinghall, set in the heart of Yorkshire. The Harrogate district is one of the most spectacular areas of England, with historic towns and villages and beautiful countryside.

We have been Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ for two years, providing a highly effective service that consistently exceed the standards of good.
We are immensely proud to share with you the results of our recent Ofsted inspection, where we were rated ‘Outstanding’. The report highlighted how we consistently reflect the highest aspirations for children and their families and, as a result, inequalities are reducing rapidly and gaps are closing.
An unannounced inspections is due soon and we are always looking to achieve the highest standard throughout our service.
We can truly make a difference to children and young people’s lives by offering a fun, functional and safe environment where all can succeed. Our new state-of-the-art centre was unveiled in 2019. Over £400,000 of capital investment has been made to make the best possible use of our unique setting to provide a perfect environment for children with complex needs. The build was created as there was a necessity for a modern, adaptable and accessible building. We champion inclusion and our modern centre is equipped with innovative services and solutions, including adaptable kitchen counters, wheel chair access, and lifts to support children and young people in their everyday lives.
We strive to create an atmosphere where children are children first and their disability is secondary.
Our outstanding service is delivered with compassion and respect, creating a happy, healthy and safe environment where children and young people can thrive.
Alongside our new centre, we have received a grant from Harrogate Borough Council to install two sensory panels. These will be created with the young people and will be sited in our award winning sensory garden. This is a special place where our children and young people enjoy a wide variety of sensory experiences. Being outdoors will not only be a fun experience for our children and young people but there is the additional benefit to overall physical and mental health which naturally occur when spending time outdoors.

We are active in the community and recognise the importance of community engagement. We have painted plant pots, bird boxes and built water feeders to share with the local elderly people’s home.
Our Holiday Club started in 2017 and the programme runs ten weeks of the year (four days a week 10am to 3pm), where we offer holiday day care for children and young people.
At Holiday Club, we arrange various activities such as:
- Visiting a donkey sanctuary to groom the animals;
- Enjoying water activities, including sailing at Nell Bank activity centre;
- Hiring the local swimming pool for the afternoon; and
- Visiting science museums and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
We encourage our children and young people into learning by creating a fun theme to base activities around. We have recently learnt about the environment and one of our activities was building an igloo out of recycled milk cartons. The Holiday Club is a key part of our service and provides the children and young people with the opportunity to have plenty of fun whilst supporting families.
The aim of the 'This is Me' Festival is to give those who would struggle to attend a festival a fully accessible experience. This includes access, facilities and activities. We also want to provide an event where everyone is accepted and feels that they can be themselves.
The 'This is Me' Festival started in 2018 and was predominately for the children who used or who had used a children’s resource centre. We extended the invite to special schools and adult provisions in the area, and the children who would have had their short break that weekend also camped out overnight to give them the full festival experience. In 2018, over 500 people attended the festival.
The 'This is Me' Festival also won the 'People’s Choice' category at the Innovation Awards in 2018.
The 2019, 'This is Me' was attended by 700 people. Following on from the success of 2018, we extended the entertainment to include:
- A bird of prey display;
- ZEN Sensory and Harrogate Youth Dance;
- An art tent;
- A market place;
- Silent disco; and
- Photo booth.
We had five performers on the stage, which ended with a DJ set. Fun was had by all and we are looking forward to planning for next year’s event.

This exciting post involves being responsible for leading shifts (including weekends and bank holidays), guiding a team of passionate Resource Centre Workers in delivering the highest standards of care, case management and monitoring of systems.
The ideal applicant will hold a diploma level 3 for Residential Childcare and have experience of working in a residential childcare setting. You will have a good level of knowledge surrounding safeguarding policies, Ofsted requirements and behaviour management strategies.

The role of Resource Centre Worker is invaluable to the centre and our children. It is rewarding, complex and challenging and you'll play an essential role in providing support and direct care to children and young people. Through supporting children, you'll also subsequently build empathetic respectful relationships.
A comprehensive programme makes sure new recruits have a thorough induction, which includes training, shadowing experienced staff and competency testing. An extensive review of performance and capability takes place during the probation period for new starters. This makes sure staff are safe and ready to take on their roles in caring for children and young people.
The role is varied and you will discover that every day is different!
You will undertake all necessary training as directed and plan self-development work with your supervisor to be able to confidently discharge all relevant duties and tasks.
Your daily duties will include:
- Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people that you are responsible for and come into contact with;
- Contributing to the planning and implementation of the day-to-day individual care needs including; administering food, monitoring and administering medicines and providing personal care in line with health care plans and procedure;
- Moving and transferring children and young people in line with health and safety policy and procedure;
- Contributing to the normal development of the children and young people though the provision of a variety of appropriate stimulating activities in an individual or a group basis;
- Working in a team, building and sustaining relationships across agencies and respecting the contribution of others working with children, young people and families;
- Working across various settings, school, family home, community and resource centres. There is an opportunity to car share if required to visit other locations; and
- Following the Council's policies and procedures and in line with Children’s Home Regulations 2015 for maintaining appropriate information and records.

As a Resource Centre Worker, you will to be enthusiastic and caring; you will support children and young people to have a fun, active and inclusive time in a safe environment which promotes and enables them to reach their full potential through a broad range of activities and initiatives. You will be patience and understanding when faced with challenging behaviour and recognise that each child and young person has their individual needs.
The service is open predominantly at weekends and school holiday period, so a flexible approach to working hours is a must. This post carries a requirement to work shifts, such as evenings, weekends, bank holidays and waking night duties. Allowances are currently paid for sleeping in, waking night’s enhancement and weekend working.
A commitment to gaining a Level 3 Diploma in Caring for Children and Young People. If you can demonstrate childcare experience, yet do not hold a Level 3 Diploma (formerly NVQ 3), you will commence on Grade F, with a bar point at the top of Grade G. Progression to Grade G is subject to successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma qualification.
You will be commitment to shared values and the common purpose of developing a culture in inter-agency working; including statutory bodies, third and private sector organisations.
You will receive all necessary training to ensure you can confidently undertake all relevant duties and tasks.
You can also expect to receive ongoing support throughout your role and to be part of a friendly, passionate and dedicated team.
If you don’t already hold a Level 3 Diploma in Caring for Children and Young People, we will ensure you receive the support you need to complete this diploma, in order to fulfil your role successfully.
