Social enterprises in North Yorkshire
A1 Computer Works offer a computer repair, build and upgrade service to the voluntary sector, local business, community groups and individuals. The business employs adults who have social care needs or who are carers. Work placements are also provided several times a year.
A1 Computer Works also provides advice and guidance about hardware and software and a website design service for new businesses with a limited budget.
Colburn Business Park
Ampleforth Plus has been created by Autism Plus in Gilling East. It is an Autism Plus social enterprise set in the picturesque Howardian Hills in North Yorkshire.
Ampleforth Plus train and support people with autism and learning disabilities in vocational and administration placements at their chocolate factory and five acre horticulture site. Ampleforth Plus has been designed to offer a variety of roles for different levels of ability, from crafting, decorating and packaging chocolate to horticulture to administration. For anyone that is unsure of what they want to do, this offers a valuable taster into different areas of work, with the chance to work to qualifications and learn new skills.
Placements in the chocolate factory include an introduction to food safety and hygiene and practical skills such as tempering, dipping and rolling, piping and crafting bars and lollies. They also cover packing, packaging, shipping and administration aspects.
The five acre site, Beanstalk Gardens, grows a range of micro vegetables, salads and fruits. Beanstalk Gardens offers training in horticulture: the safe use of tools, working outdoors, propagation, growing and harvesting and preparing for sale.
Working in partnership with Classic Car Hire North, Ampleforth Plus run a classic car hire business, Morris Minor Tours. The business offers the chance to get involved in all aspects of car hire, from cleaning and preparing the car to bookings, payment and administration.
Basics Plus is a social enterprise providing work training opportunities for more than 80 people with learning difficulties, supported by 30 staff.
The diverse range of business activities includes: paper and wood recycling; a craft and print works; leaflet distribution; catering, including a bistro; a community furniture project; a grounds maintenance service; and the production of garden ornaments and furniture.

Mount View Business Park
Betton Farm is owned and run by the Basics Plus social enterprise and provides additional skills training and employment opportunities for people with learning difficulties in the Scarborough area.
The farm was acquired by Basics Plus in 2010 and additional facilities and amenities were added. The visitor attraction now features upgraded tea rooms and a restaurant; a farm shop; a camping and caravan site; a children's animal farm and play park; a honey bee exhibition; and woodturning and pottery craft workshops. Betton Farm has also proved to be a valuable asset to the Yorkshire coast tourism industry.

The Chopsticks social enterprise provides work-based support to adults with learning difficulties, making bags of kindling wood and biomass woodchip fuel from waste timber.
Chopsticks also provide garden care and home maintenance services to older people and people with disabilities. Their premises also features a changing place facility. Chopsticks operate in the Hambleton and Richmondshire areas.

The Claro Enterprises social enterprise provides a workplace for people with mental health difficulties to develop their self-esteem, motivation and confidence and to enhance their work and social skills.
Claro Enterprises produce and sell a range of blank wooden craft items, commercial signs and garden stoneware in the Harrogate district and nationwide. They also have the facility to do light assembly outwork, such as labelling and bar coding, for manufacturers throughout the country.

The Creative Coffee social enterprise provides work placements for adults with learning difficulties, mental health problems and other adult groups currently receiving social care services.
Creative Coffee is a project from Creative Support that runs a coffee cart service in the Scarborough and Whitby area. The project helps people learn how to do a job that involves serving customers and provides opportunities for workers to gain a qualification in customer service.

Disability Action Yorkshire provides ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) accredited training courses for disabled adults in North Yorkshire.
The courses are supported with robust work experience programmes incorporated into the core teaching and learning. Disability Action Yorkshire are also a social enterprise furniture retailer, therefore some of the work experience can be undertaken within the business. They also work with external organisations to source work experience in the area of interest for the learner.

Unit i4a Hornbeam Park Oval
Easi Works has been created by Autism Plus in Easingwold. The social enterprise supports people with autism, learning difficulties and mental health conditions through vocational placements in horticulture and hospitality.
The horticulture team offer hands on experiences in horticultural skills to develop knowledge and understanding of growing and planting - in very practical, focused sessions. The group learn about the safe use of tools, working outdoors, propagation, growing and harvesting and preparing for sale.
Placements in horticulture also include gardening and maintenance services in the local community, from planting, weed control, the safe use of gardening tools, pruning to lawn mowing.
Placements in hospitality cover training and skills in customer service, welcoming and greeting, stock taking, serving and cashing up in the on site shop, with future plans to include catering and food hygiene. As part of the placements individuals have the option to work towards an ASDAN qualification.

Easingwold Business Park
Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre supports people with disabilities to reach their true potential by providing independence skills and vocational training through the Handmade at Henshaws social enterprise scheme.
People using the service learn transferable skills for employability and create a range of products as they work in the arts and crafts production units; the horticultural centre; and serve members of the public in the shop and café. Items produced are showcased on site and sold in the shop or to local businesses, giving people a sense of purpose, pride and achievement.

Through our contracting work, horticultural site and wood fuel project we offer the chance to gain horticultural and forestry skills. The Wilf Ward Family Trust Resource Centre
The Next Steps social enterprise runs a community café that is open to all. The café provides adults with mental health issues work and volunteering opportunities, improving their life and job skills.
The café also allows people to access training to further extend their skills. The Next Steps Mental Health Centre has built a strong base around the community café. It forms the hub of Next Steps and is an innovative way of supporting users.

Pioneer Projects is based at Looking Well Studios and works across Craven and into Cumbria and Lancashire. Looking Well Studios is a rural community hub which houses a range of specifically tailored and open access arts, food and landscape-based activities delivered by Pioneer Projects.
Looking Well Studios also provides space for complimentary provision from a range of other statutory and voluntary sector providers. The resultant programme has opportunities for the whole community, including people with disabilities and mental health problems.

The Purple Patch Arts social enterprise works to improve the lives and life chances of people living with learning difficulties, mental ill health or dementia by running arts workshops, lifelong learning courses and social inclusion projects.
Purple Patch Arts also run training for other organisations on how to be inclusive or use the arts to enhance their work. They run activities across North and West Yorkshire.

Church Bank House
The Ripon Community Link - Walled Garden social enterprise supports adults with learning difficulties to develop skills leading to employment in the Ripon and Harrogate areas and towards Northallerton, Thirsk and Nidderdale.
The walled garden site features a garden centre, shop and visitor centre selling plants, vegetables, fruit, flowers, chutneys and juices made from on-site produce and locally sourced seasonal goods. A gardening and maintenance service is also provided for private gardens, businesses and parish councils across the Ripon and Harrogate areas.

Selby Garden Enterprise offers a practical gardening and landscaping service for residents and businesses in the Selby area, whilst providing supported training and work experience for adults with physical, mental health and learning needs.
The services offered include lawn mowing, strimming, hedge trimming, pruning, planting, weeding and garden clearance. The social enterprise also provides volunteering opportunities for anyone interested in gardening.
Selby Garden Enterprise is an initiative developed by environmental charity Groundwork with the support of North Yorkshire County Council's innovation fund.

The Gift People is an inspiring enterprise providing adults with learning, physical, and mental health related disabilities, with the opportunity to build their artistic skills.
Working within a bright and airy environment, The Gift People support development in joinery, art and design, IT, and catering skills, whilst producing a range of unique handmade gift items. Members also benefit from access to an organised program of social and leisure opportunities.
Training for Employment (Yorkshire) C.I.C. are a community interest company based in Selby. They provide workshops about self-employment to all adult learners in the area.
The workshops are funded by The Big Lottery Fund's 'Awards for All' grant, and are free at the point of delivery. The workshops cover:
- business planning;
- setting goals;
- budgeting (household and business);
- marketing and selling;
- cash flow / profit and loss accounts; and
- tax and self-assessment.

The Yatton House Print Service social enterprise offers a bespoke print service within Yatton House that serves the printing needs of the local community and areas surrounding Great Ayton.
Yatton House support people with learning or physical disabilities by organising activities aimed at developing personal growth and promoting independence and social skills. They also provide further education opportunities and counselling for people using their services.
