Now Then! Lighting-up local communities
A bold new arts initiative is bringing world-class artists and free events to communities in Selby, Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster.
The two-year Now Then! project has already created opportunities for 13 creatives, enriching public spaces with vibrant cultural experiences.
The latest events include Selby Light which will illuminate the interior of Selby Abbey with Ancient Futures, a large-scale light installation by renowned artists Heinrich and Palmer that will run from 6 to 8 March, 2025.
Outside the abbey, digital artworks from idontloveyouanymore in partnership with Medialeand a student-designed light trail will create an immersive experience for visitors.

Throughout the year, mural artist RICE will lead public artworks in Tadcaster, including at the local football ground, while co-created residencies in Sherburn in Elmet will see artists working closely with residents to create long-term projects.
Workshops, theatre performances, and creative career programmes will bring new opportunities to people of all ages and there will be free summer festivals for all to attend across the three towns.
The Now Then! project’s creative programme lead, Tess Farley, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for communities to engage with creativity and world-class art in new and inspiring ways.
“We’re delighted to be able to deliver this ambitious programme free at the point of access, creating something truly inclusive and special for Selby, Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster."
Now Then! is funded by Arts Council England’s Place Partnership Fund, alongside support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and our Cultural Development Fund.

North Yorkshire’s cultural strategy was launched in December and marks a bold step towards making culture an everyday experience for communities across the county.
Funded by Arts Council England, it has been developed with input from the sector and communities and is the first countywide blueprint to boost participation, nurture creative talent, use accessible spaces and maximise the value of cultural assets.
The Experience Selby Light event is being staged between 6pm and 9pm from 6 to 8 March. No booking required and the event is free.
