Summer may be drawing to a close, but there is still plenty of outdoor entertainment around North Yorkshire during September, from the final agricultural shows of the year to sporting events, music and more.

Heritage Open Days take place between 8 and 17 September, enabling you to visit lots of cultural venues for free. Many North Yorkshire venues are taking part, from Scarborough Art Gallery and Stephen Joseph Theatre to Thirsk’s Ritz Cinema and Selby Abbey. Find Heritage Open Days in your area.

Saturday, 9 September

The Goldwing Light Parade and Fireworks Display has become a popular tradition for Scarborough, bringing thousands of bike fans from around the UK to the South Bay for a free seafront party every September. Goldwing motorcycles sporting neon lights transport a fleet of riders on a procession around the Marine Drive, illuminating both sides of the shoreline, before the night is closed out with a show-stopping fireworks display at about 9pm. Before the evening's parade, there will be a static display of the motorcycles, from 10am to 4pm, on West Pier and Foreshore Road. Mustering for the parade begins from 6.30pm and the parade starts at 8pm, leading the riders south along the Foreshore to the roundabout. From there the procession turns back along Foreshore Road and around Marine Drive, looping at Peasholm and returning to South Bay promenade.

Castleton Show offers trade stalls, games, local produce, live music and more. It will take place at Castleton Cricket Field and opens at 11am.

Friday, 15 September

Richmond Books and Boots Festival begins on September 15 and runs until September 24 with a series of literary events alongside daily walks.

Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage will showcase the work of more than 100 artists in 60 cottages and galleries between 15 September and 17 September. During the weekend, the doors of cottages in the village are thrown open as pop-up art galleries in a unique selling exhibition. The heritage of Staithes is celebrated through a programme of walks, talks, historic photographs, film shows, and a demonstration of how to make a lobster pot.

The Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall begins on 15 September and runs until 17 September featuring beautiful floral displays and exceptional produce from the allotment. Visitors can also enjoy Newby Hall's award-winning gardens, live talks and demonstrations, great garden shopping, and stunning floral art installations within Newby Hall.

Oktoberfest takes place at Thirsk Hall on September 15 from 6pm to 11pm, in collaboration with Timothy Taylor’s. Other events at Thirsk Hall this month include a 300th birthday party for the hall on 17 September. The birthday will be celebrated with a banquet lunch.

Saturday, 16 September

The annual Filey Kite Festival will take place at Filey Brigg Country Park place on 16 September and 17 September from 10am to 4pm each day. The event, which is free to attend, is expected to attract dozens of the UK’s best kite flyers, displaying a wide variety of weird and wonderful kites over the North Yorkshire coastline. Attractions will also include children’s fairground rides and refreshments from traders and the Country Park café. It’s an ideal opportunity to grab a picnic blanket and head to Filey for two days of spectacular displays. The event is subject to having suitable wind and weather, so may be subject to change. Pay parking is available at the country park.

Friday, 22 September

Scarborough Jazz Festival returns for its 20th anniversary and runs until 24 September with a packed programme of performances at Scarborough Spa.

Trackrod Rally Yorkshire takes place on 22 and 23 September at Dalby Forest and Cropton Forest. The internationally renowned stage rally offers a unique opportunity for the rallying community to participate in a variety of events.

Saturday, 23 September

Stokesley Show is one of the largest one-day shows in the country. While agriculture is at its heart, it offers entertainment, shopping, demonstrations and competitions throughout the showground.

Sunday, 24 September

The traditional closing event of the show season, Nidderdale Show aims to celebrate the best of agricultural traditions with top class livestock and horse sections. The show takes place at Bewerley Park, Pateley Bridge, with judging starting at 7.45am and trade stands and trade marquees open from 9am.

Friday, 29 September

From 29 September until 1 October, the Great Northern Quilt and Needlecraft Show takes place at Yorkshire Event Centre, Harrogate.

Saturday, 30 September

The popular annual Scarborough Surf Festival will be held on the lower promenade of Scarborough’s North Bay. Try a surf taster session, enjoy yoga by the sea or get involved in creating huge sand art. Take part in the beach clean, see how long you can stand on the free surf simulator or see if you can reach the top of the climbing wall. There will be stalls to browse, freshly made pizza, desserts and sweet treats to enjoy, plus a display of vintage VW campers and Beetles will line the promenade from Freddie Gilroy to the Piazza.

Scarborough Pride will take place on 30 September from noon to 6pm at Scarborough Spa.

Masham Sheep Fair takes place on 30 September and 1 October, offering an action-packed programme with sheep showing, sheep racing, craft market, Bishop Blaize Procession, fleece stalls, sheepdog demonstrations, hand bell ringers, Morris Dancers, art exhibition and tours of Theakstons and Black Sheep breweries, as well as a small children’s fair.

1 October

Sunday, 1 October, sees Apple Day and Apple Throwing Championships at Newby Hall and Gardens.

3 October

Harrogate Comedy Festival begins on 3 October at various venues across the town and continues until 15 October.

Until 31 October

Where the Wind Blows is an exhibition of paintings by Liz Salter at Yore Mill Gallery, Aysgarth. Liz’s inspiration comes from walking and exploring wild and rugged landscape.
