Two chances to win great railway prizes

To complement this issue’s look at the value of North Yorkshire’s heritage railways, we have teamed up with two of the organisations to offer readers a chance to win a family ticket to travel on the lines.

Win a family ticket for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

North Yorkshire Moors Railway is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a packed programme and we’ve teamed up with them to offer a great prize to help one family join in the fun.

In June 1967, a small group of people formed the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society, convinced that operating the line between Grosmont and Pickering could be viable if sufficient voluntary help was forthcoming. From one person in 1972 the numbers have grown to more than 600 volunteers.

Since its opening in 1973, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of its volunteers. They have been the driving force behind its success, tirelessly working to ensure its survival and growth.

Today the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Trust is a not-for-profit charitable organisation run as part of the community, and every visitor who travels on the line helps to preserve one of the world's greatest railway experiences.

The 50th anniversary has provided a platform to recognise and honour the exceptional contributions of the dedicated volunteers.

As the railway looks to the future, there is gratitude for the past and a renewed sense of purpose as it continues to captivate and inspire, weaving together the intricate threads of a rich cultural, industrial and natural heritage.

Meanwhile, the celebrations continue and you can find details of all the railway’s birthday events here, including the 50th Anniversary Steam Gala later this month, right through to the Santa Specials.

The prize of a family ticket, worth £90, entitles two adults and up to three children aged between four and 15 to visit the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in the 2023 season. It entitles the family to a Pickering to Whitby return journey along the NYMR heritage line on their chosen day of travel.

Win a family ticket to ride the Wensleydale Railway

The Wensleydale Railway offers a great day out for all the family, running services through spectacular Dales scenery, visiting restored historic stations along the way.

We have teamed up with the railway to offer the chance to win a family ticket for the line.

The Wensleydale Railway operates along the 22 miles between Scruton and Leyburn.

Today, the restored line not only connects Dales towns and villages, but offers customers a great range of activities and events, from afternoon tea at your seat to fish and chips on board the Wensleydale Fryer to the experience of taking control of a heritage diesel locomotive.

Bringing the line back to this point has taken a mammoth fundraising and volunteer effort.

With the exception of goods trains serving the quarry near Redmire until 1992, freight traffic on the line ceased in 1982.

However, the Wensleydale Railway Association was formed in 1990 with the aim of restoring passenger services to the line.

Thanks to its efforts, passenger services restarted in July 2003 with the stations at Leeming Bar and Leyburn. Since then, the stations at Scruton, Bedale and Finghall Lane have reopened. Work is ongoing to restore services from Leyburn to Redmire.

The winner of our competition can experience the thrill of the line first-hand. The family ticket entitles up to two adults and two children to a journey on any of the scheduled train services, excluding special events.
