Coffee pods

You can recycle coffee pods, free of charge, at our household waste recycling centres (except Leyburn, Settle and Wombleton).

  • keep plastic and aluminium pods separate
  • no need to remove coffee grounds
  • use a reusable bag/container to collect pods and tip them loose into the correct Podback container

All plastic or aluminium coffee, tea, milk and hot chocolate pods from participating Podback member brands can be recycled with Podback.

Podback aims to expand the programme to include all coffee brands that use plastic or aluminium pods in the UK. If your brand is not a member, you can contact them and ask them to participate. Find more information on the Podback website.

After collection, the coffee pods are taken to specialist reprocessing plants in the UK. They are shredded to remove the coffee grounds.

The plastic and aluminium are then transformed into new products, including beverage cans, car components, building products or plastic garden furniture. The coffee grounds are processed by anaerobic digestion, which creates renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver. Aluminium pods are reprocessed at Tandom Metallurgical Group Ltd. in Congleton, near Stoke-on-Trent. Plastic pods are reprocessed at Allensway Recycling Ltd near York.
