Commercial waste disposal and charges

We accept certain types of commercial waste at all of our household waste recycling centres except at the Harrogate Stonefall centre.

We charge for some types of commercial waste. However, we accept some types of commercial waste at our sites for free to encourage reuse and recycling.

Waste treated as commercial waste

Commercial waste is any waste produced from a trade, business, industrial, agricultural or professional activity. Waste generated through paid work, business operations, property management or commercial construction and landscaping activities is not household waste.

Commercial waste is waste produced from:

  • businesses and trades
  • landlords and property management activities including holiday lets
  • a person's employment
  • government and local authorities including town and parish councils
  • non-residential caravans

Commercial waste we accept for free

To encourage reuse and recycling, we accept the following types of commercial waste for free in any volume:

  • scrap metal
  • clothing
  • mixed cans and plastics
  • hard plastics
  • bric a brac
  • books
  • medical equipment
  • coffee pods

Commercial waste we do not accept

We do not accept:

  • animal carcasses or excrement
  • any waste classified as hazardous under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 including any hazardous electronic or electrical equipment - you must dispose of hazardous waste through a private licensed contractor
    asbestos
  • excessive or large amounts of commercial waste where it detracts from the service provided to household users
  • scrap vehicles, caravans or boats

How to deliver commercial waste at our sites

You can deliver commercial waste to all of our household waste recycling centres except the Harrogate Stonefall site during standard opening hours.

We do not accept commercial waste on Sundays or bank holidays.

To dispose of commercial waste at our sites you need to:

  • show your waste carrier's licence to staff on site - find out more and register as a waste carrier on the government website
  • speak to a member of staff to agree the volume and type of waste you have - this decides how much you will have to pay
  • complete a controlled waste transfer note

It is a legal requirement to complete a controlled waste transfer note if you are delivering commercial waste. Failure to comply with your duty of care is an offence subject to an unlimited fine if convicted in Crown Court. On the note, you need to include:

  • the amount and type of waste you are delivering
  • your name and address
  • the source of the waste
  • the transfer or disposal point

If you empty your vehicle before speaking to staff or do not complete a transfer note, we will assume the vehicle was full and charge the maximum amount.

Separate your waste

You may pay less by separating your waste because we accept certain types of waste for free to encourage reuse and recycling.

Commercial waste accounts

If you use our household waste recycling centres regularly, you can have an account.

Contact us for more information and guidance on how to apply.

We will cancel accounts if they have not been used for three months and we do not give credit - invoices must be paid promptly.

Charges for commercial waste

Our household waste recycling centres are primarily for residents disposing of household waste. However, we accept discretionary wastes including commercial waste at a charge to cover the cost of providing this commercial service.

If you do not want to pay, you will not be able to deliver your waste at our sites and must use another disposal option like hiring a skip or taking the waste to a private waste management company.

We do not apply VAT to non-household and commercial waste disposal charges. You must pay with a debit or credit card. We do not accept cash or cheques on site.
