A vision for Selby

Find out about the proposed improvements to public spaces, housing and employment opportunities in Selby.

We are developing a Town Investment Plan (TIP) for Selby as part of a regeneration programme across 32 towns in the county. The plans will help guide future funding bids by ensuring they are targeted to local priorities.

This project is supported by David Skaith, Major of York and North Yorkshire and part-funded by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The developed plan in Selby will be called the Vision for Selby. The plan aims to be ambitious and inclusive to improve Selby’s vitality, pride in place, and accessibility whilst supporting the role of the town as a focus for business investment. It will increase the town’s appeal to both residents and visitors, revitalise the town centre and transform travel to and within the town by delivering improvements to:

  • public spaces
  • housing
  • employment opportunities

The plan will be delivered across multiple phases. Examples of the types of improvements that may be delivered are detailed below, but we also want to hear about what local people would like to see happen in the town.

Proposed improvements

Abbey quarter

A proposed regeneration scheme that aims to revitalise key town centre locations around Selby Abbey including:

Selby Park

Phased improvements include:

  • essential repairs
  • a visitor centre
  • improved leisure facilities for all ages including arts/culture, horticulture, sports and play facilities

Town centre streetscape

Planned and proposed improvements to public spaces including Selby Marketplace to attract footfall, enhance first impressions of the town centre and provide an attractive location for businesses to establish and grow.

Bawtry Road underpass

A proposed scheme to improve road safety and promote active travel by enabling cyclists and pedestrians to pass under Bawtry Road.

Olympia quarter

Olympia Park

An ambitious scheme to unlock a major new employment site on the edge of the town centre. This will accommodate small to medium businesses, allowing them to establish and grow.

As well as creating and safeguarding thousands of jobs, the scheme will also provide employment opportunities in the construction phase.

Barlby Road Gateway

A potential scheme to enhance the main A19 route into Selby through landscaping and environmental improvements, as well as introducing arts and culture features inspired by the industrial heritage of the riverside location.

Housing development

Potential new housing developments in and/or around Selby. This could include creating:

  • new homes of all types and sizes, for a variety of people and families including those on low incomes
  • larger developments that include open spaces, community facilities and shops

Cycling and walking infrastructure

Proposals to improve cycling and walking infrastructure across Selby include:

  • creating a cycling and walking network across Selby’s urban area
  • improving the route between Selby town centre and residential areas, such as Brayton
  • encouraging people to be more active and spend time outdoors
