Community awards

The 2025 North Yorkshire Community Awards scheme is now open.

Community organisations and individual volunteers make a huge contribution to lives across North Yorkshire, helping us deliver critical services and providing social networks to reduce isolation and help people live independently for longer.

They help to deliver a wide range of critical services, from organising luncheon clubs and helping in schools, running cultural and social events, walking dogs and going shopping for elderly neighbours, helping out at cub scout and brownie guide groups, managing animal shelters and community libraries, and so much more.

Community awards 2025

The 2025 awards are now open for nominations. Nominations close on Sunday 3 August 2025.

The winner of each category will be awarded £1,000 for the relevant project, group or nominated relevant local charity in the case of awards to individual volunteers. Two runners up in each category will receive £250.

Details on how to nominate can be found in the nominations section below.

Nomination questions

Below are the questions in the nominations forms to help you prepare before filling in the form. Please note, it is not possible to save the form and come back to it at a later time.

For all the forms you need to confirm the group or individual is aware of the nomination and that they have been active between 1 May 2024 and 30 April 2025 in the North Yorkshire Council area.

In answering the questions, please anonymise any examples you give to avoid identifying any individuals who have been helped by the group/volunteer.

You will need to confirm that you have read the terms and conditions and that you agree for the council to store, process and use the information you provide in the nomination form.

All the forms ask for contact details of both nominator and nominee.

Detailed below are the open-ended questions in which you should set out why you think your nominee should win.

What voluntary activity or activities does the group carry out, for example, organising a luncheon club, running a community shop or supporting the elderly?

Please provide a short summary of the projects or activities the group has undertaken.

This should be a brief description of what the grass roots group does.

How long has the group been active in the community?

Provide detail of how long the group has been working in the community. If it has been in existence for many years a rough estimate is sufficient. This is to clarify whether it is a new initiative or a long-standing one.

How has the group tackled issues and made a positive impact to the local area?

Provide examples of improvements or benefits brought about by the group's efforts.

Describe how the group's initiatives have addressed specific community issues.

Example issues could be isolation and loneliness, health and wellbeing or improvements to the local environment. What has changed as a result of the group’s activities? If you can, please provide specific information such as the number of people helped and give us examples of how it has helped particular groups or anonymised examples of how it has had a positive impact on individuals. Please do not include any information that could identify any individual helped.

This is an opportunity to tell us about the key achievements and who has been helped.

How has the group engaged the community and got people involved?

Please tell us how the group has involved people in the local community in their activities and how the group has fostered a sense of community and involvement. This could include some or all of the following:

  • how the group has promoted its work
  • how the group has encouraged people to volunteer with the group and supported them while volunteering
  • how the group has made links to other local groups or businesses
  • how the group has inspired other groups or individuals to get involved in the local community

Please do not include any information that could identify any individual helped.

This helps us understand who is involved and how the group connects with others.
