We are developing a Town Investment Plan (TIP) for Settle as part of a regeneration programme across 32 towns in the county. The plans will help guide future funding bids by ensuring they are targeted to local priorities.
This work is supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and receives funding from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Settle and Giggleswick form a distinctive twin-settlement at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, combining rich heritage, natural beauty and a strong sense of community. Situated along the key A65 corridor and connected by the iconic Settle–Carlisle railway, the area serves as both a vibrant local centre and an important visitor destination.
Settle is a historic market town with deep rural roots, centred around a traditional marketplace and a network of independent shops, services and cultural spaces. Its heritage is reflected in its architecture, long-standing markets, and its role as a hub for surrounding villages and communities. Across the River Ribble, Giggleswick has its own distinct character, known for its attractive stone-built setting, nationally recognised educational institutions, and strong community identity.
Together, Settle and Giggleswick provide a unique blend of economic activity, tourism appeal, and community life. The area attracts visitors year-round, drawn by its proximity to the Three Peaks, its walking and cycling opportunities, and its welcoming, distinctive high-street offer. At the same time, it supports a resilient local economy, centred on small businesses, agriculture, hospitality, and education.
The key themes expected to feature in the Town Investment Plan are;
- improving the vitality of the town centre and enabling enterprise
- active travel and climate resilience
- the use of cultural and heritage assets
- public realm
- enabling people to have healthier lives
