From hands-on creative workshops and historic castle adventures to outdoor activities and vibrant festivals, there is plenty to keep families entertained this half term. Whether you are heading to the Dales, exploring market towns or visiting the coast, discover what is happening near you and start planning your days out.
Skipton, Harrogate and Pateley Bridge
If you are based in the west of the county or heading into the Dales, there is a fantastic mix of creative activities and outdoor adventures to enjoy.
Creative children will love the free Make & Take sessions at Skipton Town Hall, where they can build their own 3D pop-up art gallery inspired by current exhibitions. No booking is required. In Harrogate, the Mercer Art Gallery is hosting a similar hands-on workshop, with spaces available to book in advance via the Ticket Source website.
For those looking to get outdoors, Bewerley Park’s Adventure Club, near Pateley Bridge offers action-packed days of climbing, teamwork and skill-building for children aged 8 to 13.
Knaresborough
In the heart of North Yorkshire, Knaresborough Castle offers a brilliant mix of history and hands-on fun. Step beneath the castle on a guided sallyport tour and uncover the secrets of its hidden tunnel, once used for stealthy escapes.
Families can also join a creative Make & Take workshop at the castle, crafting their own split pin horses inspired by its medieval past.
Scarborough and Whitby
Along the coast, the half term line-up is packed with lively festivals, creative workshops and outdoor activities.
Scarborough is busy with activity throughout the week. The Scarborough Streets Festival fills the town centre with free performances, circus skills, music and workshops, creating a vibrant atmosphere for all ages.
Young explorers will love the Dino Hunt launch at the Rotunda Museum, where families can join a guided walk to discover real dinosaur footprints dating back millions of years. The experience includes an activity bag and an annual museum pass.
There is also a wide range of free creative workshops across Scarborough Museums and Galleries, including junk sculpture building, decorative tile design, fossil handling sessions and imaginative crafts such as “Dress a Donkey.” These drop-in activities are perfect for filling a few hours with something hands-on and fun.
For something a little different, older children can try sailing at Scaling Dam, near Whitby. This two-day RYA-certified course teaches essential skills on the water and is a great introduction to a new hobby.
