Newlyweds Simon and Sophie Brewster got an extra surprise when they became one of the first couples to be married under the new North Yorkshire Council banner.
They said ‘I do’ at Ryedale House register office in Malton on Monday – just hours after the office opened under the new council name.
The couple had delayed their planned February wedding day when twins Arianna and Willow decided to make an early appearance. They join 19-month-old Kayden at the family home in Kirbymoorside.
“We had planned to get married on February 6 but were told the twins could be early – they arrived on February 7 so it was a good idea to move the date,” said Simon, a 27-year-old craftsman.
“We had the best day – and it was an added surprise to find out it was a special day for the register office too.”
We have eight register offices – in Scarborough, Harrogate, Selby, Malton, Skipton, Richmond, Northallerton and Whitby – administering around 4,000 weddings and civil partnerships each year.
Eileen Clark, who has been a registrar for the last 15 years, said: “The was the first wedding in my role for the new council in Ryedale. I love meeting members of the public at these important points in their lives, so it was an absolute pleasure to celebrate this wedding between Sophie and Simon today. It was an important landmark for them, but also for our new council.
“Every wedding is different, but we treat each person with the same respect and enthusiasm as if it is the first wedding that day. Consummate professionalism is what we deliver day in and day out.”
