A wall lining Great Ayton’s High Street will be rebuilt after further movement deemed it unsafe.
An emergency lane closure has been in operation on the High Street since April due to the movement of the retaining wall, which overlooks the River Leven.
The upcoming strengthening works will begin on Tuesday (30 May), and are expected to take 12 weeks.
A full road closure will be required throughout the works, but businesses will be open as usual. They can be accessed from Newton Road and on the footway on the north side of the High Street.
Executive member for highways and transport, Cllr Keane Duncan, said: “The emergency closure was introduced to safeguard the public after continued deterioration of the wall, despite emergency repairs in February.
“During the upcoming works, the wall will be taken down and reconstructed, hopefully removing the need for further maintenance works and the disruption that inevitably brings.”
The road closure will extend the length of the retaining wall, from the A173 junction to the Pinfold car park which will be closed during the works.
A section of the car park will be used for storage and the remaining area will provide access for residents whose houses are to the rear of the High Street.
Cllr Heather Moorhouse, who represents the Great Ayton division, added: “A full road closure is required to allow contractors and machinery to safely access the wall for construction.
“We appreciate these unforeseen works will cause a considerable level of disruption, so we apologise in advance and ask for your patience.”
