Free slippers on offer at Pickering Library to prevent falls

Older people are being encouraged to pick up a pair of slippers to help to protect them from falls at a one-off event at Pickering Library.

We are working with North Yorkshire Sport to host slipper socials where people can collect a free pair of anti-slip slippers whilst chatting to other organisations that support older people.

The drop-in event at Pickering Library is from 10am to noon on Friday, 6 December.

For many older people who may be mentally fit but physically frail, having a fall can result in a loss of independence. One of the most common causes of falls by older people is loose, worn, or backless slippers.

The library service ran successful events at 14 libraries over the past two years, gifting more than 750 pairs of slippers.

The free slippers on offer have rubber soles and are wide fitting to make it easier for people with restricted mobility to get them on and off. They also have a Velcro fastener, so they will not slip off.

Representatives from Carers Support, Carers Plus Yorkshire, Sight Support, North Yorkshire Police, Living Well, NYCommunity Culture and North Yorkshire Sport will be there to answer questions.

Pickering Library volunteers will also be holding a Christmas coffee morning to coincide with the event.
