Public’s views sought about Richmond’s swimming pools

Residents are being asked for their views on one of North Yorkshire’s leisure centres to help shape the future of the site.

A survey has been launched today (Monday, 30 June) after both swimming pools at the Active North Yorkshire Richmond site have had to be shut following a partial collapse of the building’s ceiling.

Investigations at the building have revealed that there are several historic issues and that the work which is needed is extensive.

In addition to the essential repairs required, other areas are in urgent need of improvement and key equipment needs to be replaced.

Rather than considering options in a piecemeal way, we are carrying out further assessments of the building and is considering all possible options.

The survey is being launched so that the views of local communities who use the facilities can be considered as a key part of this work.

Options for the future of the building could include:

  • Undertaking only the essential works that are needed
  • Undertaking essential work as well as some improvements, such as to changing rooms
  • Rethinking what leisure services can be offered at the site
  • Alternative uses for the site
  • Closing the centre

Any decision will be taken in the context of the wider work for the countywide leisure investment strategy that is also underway, rather than taking an isolated view of the site in Richmond.

The initial findings are expected to be considered by elected members in the autumn.

Executive member for leisure, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “We want to make sure that we gather as many views as possible from the public to help make an informed decision on the future of the Richmond site.

“The closure of the swimming pools is disappointing news for customers, the local community and for us as well, and we apologise for the ongoing disruption and thank them for their patience.

“All options are being considered and no decision has been taken, so I would urge anyone who would like to express their views to take part in the survey.”

Alternative facilities are available to customers in the local area, including the Active North Yorkshire centres in Bedale and Northallerton.

A café at the site in Richmond is continuing to operate as normal. The neighbouring gym, where two businesses are based, is also unaffected by the current closure.
