Budding entrepreneurs are being encouraged to take advantage of a new book collection available at libraries across North Yorkshire.

The county’s library service has teamed up with colleagues in economic development to curate a bespoke collection appealing to either those in business or anybody looking to set one up.

The launch was marked at The Sky’s the Limit – Breaking Through the Glass Ceiling business event in Harrogate last week. It saw 12 local women involved in business sharing insights on professional success and leadership.

Our executive member for arts and culture, Councillor Simon Myers, whose responsibilities include libraries, said: “We are pleased to launch an inspiring book collection packed with practical ideas to help start-ups and small businesses to thrive.

“Libraries are the perfect place to start or grow your business, with free Wi-Fi and access to computers and essential services such as printing, scanning and photocopying.

“They also offer support to anybody using technology, with friendly volunteer IT buddies ready to help.

“The books are free to reserve from your local library, on the libraries app or on our website, so I’d urge all business-minded people to make use of them.”

Library members can use the online database, Complete Business Reference Advisor, which allows access to start-up guides and ideas on more than 350 different types of businesses.

There is information on business support in your area, market and sector guides, as well as business rules and regulations.

Georgia Eckert, the owner and founder of Imagined Things Bookshop in Harrogate, was one of the speakers at The Sky’s the Limit event.

She said: “It is excellent to see that North Yorkshire libraries are investing in business-focussed books.

“Before starting my bookshop nine years ago, books were an integral source of knowledge and encouragement, and this list looks incredible for anyone interested in starting their own business.

“It is something I would certainly have used in early planning stages, as you never know what ideas or essential knowledge you’ll gain from experts, or those who’ve been there before you.

“It could connect the dots or give you that push to finally do something you’ve always dreamed about.”
