Scarborough’s seaside heritage will take centre stage with the spectacular return of Moonlight on the Lake later this year.

Organised by us in partnership with Animated Objects, the event transforms the town’s Peasholm Park into a wonderland of beautiful handmade lanterns and illuminations.

More than 10,000 people visited the event last year and organisers are looking to build on those numbers this time around with tickets on sale from today. (Wednesday, June 10).

Taking place on Friday, 23 October and Saturday, 24 October, the popular lantern trail will feature an exciting new centrepiece for 2026 - a stunning series of illuminated displays celebrating Scarborough 400, marking the town’s rich history as England’s first seaside spa resort. This has been made possible through funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Executive member for arts and culture, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “After the tremendous success of last year’s Moonlight on the Lake, it’s really important that we continue to build on that momentum and keep raising the bar for what this event can offer.

“It has quickly become a highlight in Scarborough’s cultural calendar, bringing people together through creativity, heritage and shared experiences.

“This year’s focus on Scarborough 400 adds a new dimension, giving both local people and visitors a chance to celebrate the town’s unique story in a fresh and engaging way.

“Events like this not only create memorable evenings, they also play a vital role in supporting the local economy and showcasing Scarborough as a vibrant, welcoming destination. It’s a fantastic example of how culture can connect communities, attract visitors and foster pride in our place.”

Tickets are available via the Scarborough Fair website, priced at £3 for adults plus a 50p booking fee, with free entry for under-15s.

One of the directors of Animated Objects, Dawn Dyson-Threadgold, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Moonlight on the Lake back to Peasholm Park this year.

“It’s such a beautiful and well-loved park, and the reflections on the water are truly spectacular as evening falls.

“We’re also really excited to be showcasing a number of illuminations we’ve worked on with the local community as part of the Scarborough 400 display.”

Moonlight on the Lake is one of a series of popular events held outside the peak summer months, designed to strengthen Nort Yorkshire’s year-round visitor economy.

Tourism plays a vital role in the Scarborough area, generating more than £579 million each year, welcoming around 3.9 million visitors, and supporting over 5,500 full-time jobs.
