Repairs to the community football pitch at Scarborough Sports Village have reached the final stages with the new playing surface set to be installed.
We have secured the long-term future of the pitch by overseeing a comprehensive package of repairs at the home ground of Scarborough Athletic Football Club and Scarborough Ladies Football Club.
Structural works to provide a stable base for the new pitch have been completed by a construction company Willmott Dixon, which now allows the playing surface to be laid.
Work to install the new pitch began this week, and it is anticipated that the project will be completed by Friday, 26 June.
This will allow competitive fixtures to return to Scarborough Sports Village in time for the start of the 2026/27 football season in August.
Executive member for leisure, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “This project has been a priority for us ever since our commitment to protecting the pitch’s long-term future for the benefit of the communities of Scarborough and beyond.
“From the outset, we have been clear that these repairs must be completed to a high standard, and crucially, as quickly as possible in order to minimise the impact on those who rely heavily on the pitch – especially Scarborough Athletic and their fans.
“I am delighted that we are now in the final stages of the project, with the new pitch being re-laid. It is great that the new playing surface will be installed well in advance of the new 2026/27 football season, as we promised.
“I am looking forward to seeing fans and pitch users return to Scarborough Sports Village in the coming weeks, and I would like to thank our communities for their patience and cooperation over the last few months.”
Willmott Dixon director Chris Yates added: “Works at Scarborough Sports Village are now moving into the final phase, with our team having made strong progress on site.
“We know how important the facility is to the Scarborough community and are pleased that the new surface is set to be installed in time for the new season.”
A complex package of repairs was required on the 3G pitch after a site survey conducted last year highlighted key issues that needed to be addressed before a new surface could be laid.
As a result, the pitch was unavailable for competitive fixtures for the 2025/26 season. During this time, Scarborough Athletic played its home fixtures at Bridlington Town’s ground.
The club has since announced that their first fixture back at the Scarborough Sports Village will be a pre-season friendly against Barnsley on Saturday, 25 July, with a 1pm kick-off.
