Crowds are due to descend on Scarborough to witness a “flipping marvellous” annual Pancake Day extravaganza later this month (February).
The resort has a long tradition of hosting Pancake Day races, with hundreds of people lining the streets to watch the event last year.
This year, our chairman, Cllr George Jabbour, will ring the Pancake Bell on North Street at midday on Tuesday next week (17 February).
Onlookers head to Aberdeen Walk for the races, then move down to the foreshore for some skipping by the seaside.
Competitors, many from local businesses, don fancy dress for the races and try to master the tricky obstacle course in the hope of being rewarded with the golden frying pan prize.
In bygone times, the ringing of the Pancake Bell on Shrove Tuesday was a signal to housewives in Scarborough to start frying pancakes and still retains symbolic significance to this day.
Cllr Jabbour said: “It is a privilege to be asked to ring the bell to signal the start of the festivities.
“This event is eagerly anticipated each year and keenly contested, and I look forward to meeting all those taking part and cheering on from the sidelines.”
Chris Golder, manager of Boyes in Scarborough, received the golden frying pan last year.
He said: “The pancake race has been something we look forward to every year at Boyes.
“It is a great event that we have been competing in for over 20 years. The crowds are great and really cheer the teams on and it is a real tradition in Scarborough which makes it such a fun day.”
