A £32 million project to place Selby railway station at the heart of new regeneration and investment is set to begin.

The Transforming Cities Fund project aims to encourage the use of sustainable transport through delivering improved access, walking and cycling routes to the station.

Contractors Galliford Try Ltd will begin demolition work at James William House on Cowie Drive at the end this month, followed by the former Railway Social Club and Selby Business Centre on Station Road.

The first phase of the scheme, which will be carried out over the next 12 months, will also see a new car park built at the station and accessible platform access to the rear of the building.

There will be an improved and remodelled bus station, and improvements to footpaths and cycleways.

Executive member for highways and transport, Cllr Malcolm Taylor, said: “I’m pleased to announce that after many months of development, and through close working with partners and the community, we are ready to begin the scheme.

“It represents a major investment to enhance the area and improve routes leading to the railway station, and we are confident that the project will act as a catalyst for further investment for Selby.

“We will keep the public updated when details of further phases come forward.”

The £32m scheme is funded by the Department for Transport, ourselves, York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and Active Travel England.

It is being delivered by ourselves with the support of partners from West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Network Rail and Trans-Pennine Express.
