We have looked at the different ways we can collect recycling, and following a detailed modelling exercise, we believe using two wheelie bins for recycling provides the most efficient and effective way of collection.
This model of collection is currently used in Selby, Malton and small areas of Harrogate, and has proved to be successful. It is also in-line with government legislation that says paper and card should be collected separately from other materials.
In due course, residents will receive two wheelie bins for recycling:
- one for paper and card (blue lidded bin)
- one for glass, cans, plastic and cartons (red lidded bin)
This will allow us to increase the amount and quality of recycling, reduce the cost of collection, and help towards carbon reduction. Separating paper and card for recycling also improves the quality and generates a higher value when it is processed.
Richmondshire residents
If you live in the former Richmondshire area, you will receive a letter and information leaflet about the new recycling service during the first half of August.
Delivery of the new recycling wheelie bins will begin on 10 August and continue over an eight-week period, with all deliveries expected to be completed by 2 October.
In late September, you will receive a further letter confirming the details of your first collections under the new service, which will begin in October. Please do not use your new recycling bins until instructed to do so as outlined in your information pack.

Bin delivery dates
We will send you a letter when your area is due to receive new wheelie bins for recycling. In the meantime, please continue to use your existing recycling collection method.
However, if other properties on your street have had theirs, and you haven’t, please contact us.

What are the bins for?
The blue lidded wheelie bin is for:
- paper and card
The red lidded wheelie bin is for:
- aerosols
- clean foil
- food and drink cans and cartons
- glass bottles and jars
- plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
Where will my bins be left when they are delivered?
For most properties, the bins will be left at the property boundary.
For properties on assisted collections, they will be left where the existing bins and boxes are stored.
For rural properties where bins are stored at the lane end, this is where they will be left.
How often will the bins be emptied?
Each bin will be emptied on alternate fortnights (every four weeks). Your rubbish will still be collected every two weeks, but your collection day or time may change. For example:
- week one: rubbish
- week two: paper and card (blue lidded bin)
- week three: rubbish
- week four: glass, cans, plastic and cartons (red lidded bin)
If you are a garden waste customer, your collection day will not change and will remain the same as it is now. This may be on a different day to your rubbish and recycling.
Can I start using my bins straight away once they arrive?
You will receive details of your new collection dates in the post, along with more information about the new service and when you can start using your bins.
Please do not use them before this time, as we won’t be able to empty them.
When I receive my bins, will my collection day or collection time change?
An information pack will be sent to you with further information about your collection day and dates. Your time of collection may also change so please continue to make sure you present your waste by 6am on your collection day.
Will there be any changes to rubbish and garden waste collections?
Your rubbish collection day may also change, but this will be clearly explained in your information pack.
There will be no change to garden waste collections.
Will you be taking away my existing boxes and bags?
You will need to keep using your existing boxes until the start of your new collections, as stated in your information pack. After that time, you are encouraged to keep the boxes and bags and reuse them.
Can I get help to put my bins out?
If you are unable to, you can get help to put your bins out. If you already have assistance with your collections, this will continue with your new bins.
I live in a flat/apartment and have communal bins. Will I get new bins?
We will be reviewing the number, type and size of communal bins at each site to make sure there is enough capacity for residents to recycle as much as possible.
I have a sack collection. Will I be getting new bins?
If you currently receive a sack collection for both rubbish and recycling, you will stay on a sack collection.
If you currently receive a sack collection for recycling but are on a wheelie bin collection for rubbish, we may be able to move you to the new wheelie bin collection for recycling.
