Regional spatial strategy

A small part of Southern Ryedale is in the York Green Belt.

The York Green Belt policies were kept by the government when it partially revoked the regional spatial strategy. Those saved policies are part of our development plan.

We use these specific policies, and the policies in our Ryedale Plan: Local Plan Strategy, and the criteria in the National Planning Policy Framework to assess planning applications made in the York Green Belt area.

Until these policies of the regional spatial strategy are revoked, they continue to have statutory weight. However, given that the City of York Local Plan was adopted in February 2025 and defines the York Green Belt inner boundaries, the regional spatial strategy policies will now be afforded less weight in decision making.

The key documents to look at are:

  •  regional spatial strategy document (pdf / 2 MB)
  •  regional spatial strategy for Yorkshire and Humber - partial revocation order 2013 (pdf / 50 KB)
