Bridges

Find out how to report non-emergency issues with bridges, footbridges, subways or drainage culverts.

Do it online

Report a bridge or highway structure issue

If you prefer, you can also tell us about a bridge or highway structure issue anonymously, but you will miss out on the benefits of having an account such as getting progress updates.

Use our online form to report non-emergency issues with bridges or other highway structures including footbridges, subways or drainage culverts.

For example, you can report:

  • cracks
  • graffiti
  • damage to a bridge caused by a traffic accident only if the damage does not create an emergency
  • damaged bridge parapet walls
  • damaged railings on a footbridge
  • rotten wood on a footbridge
  • drainage issues with a culvert

Reports before 8 July 2026

We changed our reporting system in July 2026. If you want to check an issue you reported before 8 July 2026, you can find it in your previous account records.

In an emergency

If it is an emergency and poses a safety risk, contact us. Out of office hours, call North Yorkshire Police on 101. If there is a danger to life, call 999.

Bridge maintenance

We are responsible for over 1,700 bridges on the highway network as well as larger retaining walls.

You can find out about our bridge strengthening programme and our targets for bridges in our local transport plan.

Our interactive roadworks map also includes bridges and shows details about the dates and impact of roadworks and who is responsible. You can also sign up for email alerts for roadworks in your area.

What happens when you report a bridge issue

We assign costs and priorities to all issues reported to us or that we find during routine inspections and use this to create an unscheduled work list. Some of the factors we use to prioritise issues include a structure's:

  • location
  • level of use
  • current condition
  • potential impact on the wider highway network

Typical interventions we might choose include:

  • traffic management measures
  • emergency repairs
  • temporary closures

Abnormal loads and weight limits

Visit our abnormal loads and weight limits page to find out about giving notice if you need to move an abnormal load over a bridge.
