Dredging at Whitby Harbour

Whitby Harbour has its own dredger. Find out information about the specifications and how to hire the Whitby Harbour dredger.

The ‘Sandsend’ was converted from a dumb barge in 2003.

The excavating pontoon was the first of its kind and had an extensive modification in 2016.  A Hitachi long reach excavator was mounted on the vessel and two hydraulically operated spud legs.

Depths

The dredger maintains the depths of the channels and harbours at Whitby and Scarborough. The channel depth within Whitby is maintained where possible at a depth of 1.4 metres below chart datum.

Depths on private moorings are maintained where possible at the following depths, however these cannot be guaranteed due to occasional rapid silting (all depths are below chart datum):

  • private moorings on pontoons below Spital Bridge: 1.5 metres
  • Eskside Wharf: 1.5 metres
  • Endeavour Wharf: 2 metres
  • Fish Quay: 2 metres

Soundings are taken and recorded annually, with additional soundings taken as and when required.

Hire

The dredger is available for external contract work when spare capacity is available. Please contact the Harbour Master if you are interested in hiring the system.
