Parliamentary elections

Information about Parliamentary or 'general' elections.

A general election is used to vote for Members of Parliament (MP) to represent all areas of the UK in the House of Commons, at the UK Parliament in Westminster, London.

The UK is split into constituencies, and each constituency votes for an MP to represent them, using the 'first past the post' system.

There are currently six parliamentary constituencies within the North Yorkshire Council area:

  • Harrogate and Knaresborough
  • Richmond (Yorkshire)
  • Scarborough and Whitby
  • Selby and Ainsty
  • Skipton and Ripon
  • Thirsk and Malton

The local MPs representing those areas can be found on the local MP's page.

The last general election was held on 12 December 2019.

The next UK Parliamentary election must be held by 28 January 2025.

The constituency boundaries will change at the next Parliamentary election due to changes approved by Parliament.  Details can be found on the UK Parliament website.

Due to these changes, at the next Parliamentary election, there will be seven constituencies within the North Yorkshire area:

  • Harrogate and Knaresborough
  • Richmond and Northallerton
  • Scarborough and Whitby
  • Selby
  • Skipton and Ripon
  • Thirsk and Malton
  • Wetherby and Easingwold

Guidance for candidates and elections agents at Parliamentary elections is available on the Electoral Commission website, which includes nomination papers and information about qualifications, disqualifications and deposit amounts.
