Providing support to carers - local carers' support services
Local carers' support services are organisations we work with who provide practical and emotional support to carers. There are two such providers for adult carers in North Yorkshire:
- Carers’ Resource
- Carers Plus Yorkshire
These providers operate from four main bases covering:
- Craven
- Hambleton and Richmondshire
- Harrogate and Selby
- Scarborough and Ryedale
Services offered by the local carers' support services include:
- confidential information, advice, emotional support and representation
- benefits advice
- regular information in the form of circulars, bulletins or newsletters
- referrals to other specialist support organisations
- information sessions, courses and other related activities
- support groups for carers
- help for carers who need support to continue working and caring
The local carers' support services also work in partnership with carers, carer groups and other organisations to improve services for carers and promote their interests.

Carer support groups
Carer support groups are usually small, with members meeting informally to discuss various topics.
The meetings can help carers:
- cope with caring responsibilities
- meet, discuss and learn from other carers in similar situations
- reduce isolation
- support each other
- receive emotional and social support and information
Meetings are usually free but there can be a small charge for refreshments. If you feel you need one-to-one support, your local carers' centre should be able to provide this information. Counselling support may be available through your GP.
