Green bins and black sacks
Use your green bin or black sack for general household waste that cannot be recycled or composted.
We cannot take:
- batteries and vapes
- building materials
- soil and rubble
- clinical waste
- asbestos
- large bulky items like furniture
- electrical items
- toxic or hazardous waste like car batteries, motor oil, paint or corrosive materials
Batteries
Please do not place used, dead batteries in the rubbish bin or recycling as these can be crushed or punctured when the waste is collected and processed. Some battery types can ignite or explode when they are damaged and can then set fire to other materials in your waste bin.
Batteries should be recycled safely at one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres or find your local battery recycling point on the Take Charge website.
Ash and dust
- hot ashes from a fire can go in the green bin once cooled and must be bagged
- sawdust and dust can go in the green bin and must be bagged
Large items like furniture can be collected using our bulky waste collection service. There is a charge for this. Book a bulky waste collection.
Blue bins and clear sacks
Use your blue bin or clear sack for recycling. We recycle four main types of waste:
- glass bottles and jars
- paper, cardboard and cartons
- food tins, drink cans, aerosols (spray cans) and foil
- plastic bottles, tubs, pots and trays
All items for recycling should be loose (not bagged), clean and dry.
We can’t accept clothing and textiles for recycling. These should be taken to charity shops or recycling banks.
We are unable to accept food waste.
Waste we can’t accept is called contaminated waste. It’s important not to put this into your bin, as we won’t take it away. If we find contaminated waste in your bin, we will put a tag on your bin to let you know. You should remove the contaminated waste and put the bin out on the next collection date.
You can take rubbish we don’t accept to your local household waste recycling centre.
