Cemeteries - general information

General information regarding all of the cemeteries we maintain.

Commonwealth War Graves

Commonwealth War graves can be found in several of our cemeteries. Their maintenance and upkeep is the responsibility of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Cemetery operation and maintenance

Town and Parish Councils and independent providers are responsible for the operation and maintenance of other cemeteries within North Yorkshire. Please consult the relevant Burial Authority for queries regarding other cemeteries.

Closed churchyards

Closed Church of England churchyards may have the responsibility for maintenance passed to the Council; however, this is not always the case. For enquires concerning the maintenance of churchyards please consult with the relevant Parochial Church Council.

Burials

Burials take place Monday to Friday from midday with the last at 3pm (2pm during winter months). Staff members will ensure that the grave is maintained after the interment, and the funeral flowers are left neatly on the top of the grave.

Regular checks around the cemetery grounds ensure that perished flowers are removed and the grave kept tidy.

Memorials

We encourage unique and individual memorials to suit your loved ones. We have a range of monumental masons who are registered with us, who have a variety of designs and different stones to choose from. For safety purposes we only allow memorial work to be carried out by monumental masons who are included in our approved register.

Burial records

We hold records for every burial at this cemetery. If you would like us to conduct a search, please contact us with as much information about the deceased as possible.

Opening hours

All our cemeteries are open from sunrise to sunset. Please take care in the dark or in adverse weather conditions and always respect the grounds and other visitors.
